The Rev. Canon Dr. Howard Anderson named fifth Rector of St. Matthew's ParishA Letter from Lynne M. O. Brickner, Senior Warden
Dear Friends of the Parish of St. Matthew, It is my great honor to announce that the Wardens and Vestry have called The Reverend Canon Howard R. Anderson to be the fifth rector of the Parish of St. Matthew. Howard is currently the Warden of the Cathedral College of the Washington National Cathedral where he has served since 2004. He is enthusiastically returning to parish ministry and he has served as rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Duluth, Minnesota from 1994 to 2004. He served from 1988 to 1994 with the Diocese of Minnesota as a stewardship and development officer and worked closely there with Bishop Bob Anderson. Prior to his ordination in 1988, he worked with the Dioceses of Minnesota and North Dakota and with Native American ministries. He holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in American Studies from the University of Hawaii and a B.A. in American Studies from Hamline University. Further information about Howard can be found at http://www.cathedral.org/cathedral/news/staff/anderson.shtml. Howard and his wife, Linda, will visit us later this spring and plan to move here this summer. The task of discerning the call for a new rector was undertaken with deliberation, dedication and hard work by the following members of the Parish Profile Committee, the Search Committee and the Vestry: Kathy Bitting • Jim Brill • Susan Carroll • Jocelyn Cortese Our thanks to Nona Greene who served as chair of the Parish Profile Committee and the Search Committee and who also advised the Vestry during its discernment process. Nona has led us with skill, humor and faithfulness during the past two years. The Search Committee and the Vestry were lovingly guided by The Reverend Betsy Anderson, and her reflections, readings and prayers provided the spiritual support so necessary for discernment by the committee members. We are grateful for the ministry of The Reverend Canon David Walton Miller. We are a healthy and vibrant Parish thanks to David and are able to call a new rector because of the community of caring and respect that David has so carefully nurtured as our Rector. His ministry of healing and reconciliation kept our Parish together during some very stormy times, and David never gave up on us and the vision of what we could become. We will have many opportunities to show our thanks to David and Sarah in the months ahead and hope that you will join your fellow parishioners in doing so. Thanks to God’s grace, we have so much to celebrate as a Parish community. Sincerely, Lynne M. O. Brickner |
