Holy Week and Easter in the Year of our Lord 2005
at the Parish of Saint Matthew

Sunday, March 20 - Palm Sunday
The Holy Eucharist at 8:00 am and 10:15 am

The Palm Sunday Liturgy, with its dramatic retelling of Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem and the events leading up to the Crucifixion, sets the stage for the great services of Holy Week.

Monday, March 21 - Monday in Holy Week
The Holy Eucharist at 7:00 am

Tuesday, March 22 - Tuesday in Holy Week
The Holy Eucharist at 7:00 am

Wednesday, March 23 - Wednesday in Holy Week
The Holy Eucharist at 7:00 am and 10:00 am

Thursday, March 24 - Maundy Thursday
The Holy Eucharist at 7:00 am
Agapé Meal and Footwashing at 6:00 pm (in The Parish Center)
The Maundy Thursday Liturgy at 7:30 pm
The Watch will be kept following the Maundy Thursday Liturgy.
The Chapel will be open all night for quiet prayer.

The Maundy Thursday Liturgy commemorates the last night of Jesus’ life, including the Last Supper Jesus celebrated with his disciples and his betrayal and arrest. The Watch will be kept through the night in memory of Jesus’ time of prayer and suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane, and his question to his disciples, “Could you not watch with me one hour?”

Friday, March 25 - Good Friday
Family Time at the Watch from 8:30-9:00 am, followed by a Good Friday Hike
The Good Friday Liturgy at 12:30 pm and 7:30 pm
The Stations of the Cross at 3:00 pm

The Good Friday Liturgy is the Church’s most solemn service of prayer and worship, when the account of Jesus’ Crucifixion from the Gospel accoding to John is read and prayer is offered on behalf of all people and nations in remembrance of Jesus’ offering of himself for the salvation of the whole human race.

Saturday, March 26 - Holy Saturday
The Holy Saturday Liturgy at 9:00 am
The Great Vigil of Easter at 7:30 pm

The brief, spare Holy Saturday Liturgy remembers the empty, cold hours between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, when Jesus lay in death.

The Great Vigil of Easter is the most ancient and joyful of all the Church’s liturgies.
The Lighting of the Paschal New Fire, Readings, Holy Baptism, and the proclamation of the Resurrection make it the greatest celebration of the Christian life.

Sunday, March 27 - Easter Day
The Holy Eucharist at 8:00 am and 10:15 am

Two services of rejoicing in the triumph of the Risen Christ over sin, suffering and death, with music by Saint Matthew’s Choir and orchestra at both liturgies.
