Now entering its 23rd anniversary year, the fully-professional, 35-member St. Matthew’s Chamber Orchestra continues to offer an innovative and interesting mix of programs, ranging from the early Baroque to music commissioned by the Music Guild for performance by the orchestra. In the past, we have commissioned works from, among others, Maria Newman, Mark Falcone, David Newman, Thomas Pasatieri, Craig Phillips, Joseph Curiale, Roger Bourland, Ross Wright, Dwayne S. Milburn, Gerald Near, Paul Chihara and John O’Reilly. In the 2007 – 2008 season we will present three world premieres, of works by Ross Wright, Dwayne S. Millburn and David Angel. Other season highlight include Samuel Barber’s lyrical Violin Concerto, with violinist Yi-Huan Zhao; an all-Bach program in December; Debussy’s evocative “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun” in an arrangement for chamber ensemble by Arnold Schoenberg; a suite from Copland’s “The Tender Land” with soprano Diane Plaster and tenor Daniel Plaster; Wagner’s Wesendonk Lieder, with mezzo-soprano Rose Beattie; Handel’s glorious Jubilate and Te Deum for the Peace at Utrecht, and much more. In addition to all this, we will welcome two outstanding ensembles: Montreal-based Ensemble Caprice – one of the hottest early-music ensembles in the world today, featuring the world’s foremost recorder virtuoso Mattias Maute, and members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, making their third visit to St. Matthew’s, this time with the Philharmonic’s Principal Oboe, Ariana Ghez. On October 1, St. Matthew's Music Guild will co-sponsor a special program commemorating the 300th anniversary of the death of one of the most important musical figures before J.S. Bach, Dieterich Buxtehude. The program, free and open to the public, will include some of the composer's finest organ, instrumental and vocal music. Click here for more details. Take a moment to go to our subscription page and either join the Music Guild or renew your season subscription. It all begins on October 19 and all the best names in towns will be here. We hope you will join us. Tom Neenan
