Women’s Emmaus with Yoga

Tuesday Mornings 8:30-10:30a.m.
Leader: Stephanie Houge

Stretch your body and stretch your faith!  First, the group does a 45 minute Yoga practice, and then meets to discuss scripture, share fellowship and pray together.  By being still, we create space for the Holy Spirit to move in our hearts and bring clarity to our thoughts.  You are invited to join us!

The Men’s Group

Wednesday Evenings 8:00-9:30pm
Leader: Ted Russell

The Men’s Group offers a relaxed atmosphere for the men of St. Matthew’s to meet one another and connect on a deeper level. We worship together, participate in outreach activities together, and offer fellowship and support for one another as we all struggle to balance our obligations to God, to our families and our jobs. This fall, we are taking a fresh approach that focuses on a very specific topic: finding God in untraditional, somewhat unexpected places. So while we read and consider scripture each week, we will also go beyond the Bible and discuss some particularly powerful stories, poems, articles and movie scenes, all of which clearly show God’s hand at work. The goal is for us to see God’s presence all around us, and not just on Sunday mornings within the walls of the church. We hope you can join what promises to be a fun and engaging 11-week covenant period! Please mark your calendars now. New members are always welcome.

Pariahs

Wednesday Evenings 8:00-9:30p.m.
Leader: Terry Bird

Pariah’s: It’s a surprising name for a Christian small group, but scripture itself is full of surprises with twists and turns that force us to confront our own assumptions and prejudices. This Men’s group, most of whose members are experienced in Emmaus small groups, is a deeply committed group. The group’s three rules are: Show up (no dropping in and out), Show Yourself (be real), Show Respect (What happens with the Pariahs stays with the Pariahs). We devote our time to exploration of what it means to be a Christian by considering the lessons of the Bible and our everyday lives. Community service is also an important commitment and learning opportunity for the Pariahs.

James: Walking the Talk

Thursday Mornings 7:15 - 8:45am
Leaders: Susanne Howarth & Jane Anderson

This group, led by Susanne Howarth and Jane Anderson, will work with “James: Walking the Talk,” from the Serendipity Bible series. The letter of James is very different from most of the New Testament epistles, because James’s concern is not church doctrine but ethics: how the Christian faith is to be lived out day-to-day.

Our two all-age early morning groups invite you to join us as we explore St. Paul’s epistle to the Philippians. In spite of the fact that Paul wrote this letter from the darkness of a Roman prison, it’s known as his “letter of joy”. We’ll use the Serendipity book, "Joy Under Stress" to help guide us through this important letter. We will deepen our understanding, personally reflect, and share supportively as we seek to grow, and better find joy, in our modern stressful world... it will be a very worthwhile journey! One group begins meeting at 7:15, and the other at 7:30.

Behold the Man

Thursday Mornings 7:30 - 9:00am
Leaders: Karen Grigsby & Linda Wesson

This group, led by Karen Grigsby and Linda Wessen will study “Life of Christ: Behold the Man.” Using excerpts from all four Gospels, this Serendipity study guide follows the life of Christ from the birth narrative in Luke through Jesus’s ministry and crucifixion, to his resurrection and the great commission. What could be more perfect for Lent?

A Wing and a Prayer

Thursday Evenings 7:30-9:00p.m.
Leader: Nancy von Oeyen

Come join us as we become better acquainted with the Most Reverend Dr. Katharine Jefferts Schori, the first woman to serve as Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the USA, as we read her book, "A Wing and a Prayer-A Message of Faith and Hope."  We will supplement these essays, which began life as sermons, by listening to some of her more recent sermons. The Most Reverend Dr. Jefferts Schori is a pilot and was an oceanographer with the National Marine Fisheries Service prior to her ordination as a priest in 1994.  We welcome anyone who is interested in finding out more about our Presiding Bishop, examining our faith and experiencing Emmaus.

Mother's Lenten Group: Grace in the Sticky Years

Friday mornings 10:00-11:30 (during Lent)
Leader: Kathleen Macomber

Parenting young children is wonderful, rewarding, challenging, exhausting and just plain sticky. This lent, you’re invited to join a short-term (six-week) mother’s Emmaus group beginning in February. Take the time to join with other mothers to grow spiritually in the midst of the demands of parenthood. Our group is an open, caring place to share our experiences and support each other, please join us.

T.G.I.F.

Friday Afternoons 12:00- 2:00 p.m.
Leaders: Julie Nichols/Stacey Rosser

We invite you to join us in God’s presence as we slow down from our hectic week. We share a simple lunch and begin each meeting with meditative prayer. Through selected Christian reading, we continue our spiritual journeys and self-discovery. Our group has a strong outreach component. We welcome you to join us whether you are new to our Parish community or are continuing your Emmaus journey!
