Haitian Relief Effort Underway
Haiti
has suffered catastrophic devastation and all of us are asking how we
can help. There are literally hundreds of Episcopal churches, schools,
convents and orphanages in Haiti. The most efficient and expedient way
to direct aid is through the local parishes where those on the
ground know what is most urgently needed and where it
should be directed.
Episcopal Relief and Development is a very efficient
organization with an excellent track record of delivering
aid and assistance quickly and cost-effectively. We urge you to use the
link found below to make a
donation directly to Episcopal Relief and Development. At the same time,
St. Matthew’s Sunday openplate
offering for the next several weeks will be directed to ERD’s relief
efforts.
The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, the Presiding Bishop
of the Episcopal Church has issued the
following statement concerning the January 12 earthquake in Haiti:
The people of Haiti have suffered a devastating earthquake, and it
is already clear that many have died
and many more are injured. Even under “normal” circumstances,
Haiti struggles to care for her 9
million people.
The nation is the poorest in the western hemisphere, and this
latest disaster will set back many recent
efforts at development. I urge your prayers for those who have died,
been injured, and are searching
for loved ones - and I urge your concrete and immediate prayers in
the form of contributions to
Episcopal Relief & Development, who are already working with the
Diocese of Haiti to send aid where
it is most needed.
Urgently - without a moment’s delay - Episcopal Relief & Development
needs your help to respond to
this catastrophic earthquake.
As the crisis unfolds, we are working with the Diocese of Haiti
to provide critical, life saving assistance
such as food, water and medicine, as well as long-term recovery and rehabilitation
aid in the aftermath
of the January 12 earthquake.
Donate now to Episcopal Relief & Development’s Haiti Fund.
Be as generous as you can and please join me in praying for the safety
and welfare of those in Haiti
struggling to survive this terrible crisis.
